Two air hostesses of Biman Bangladesh Airlines have come under suspicion for luring rich businessmen into romance scams. While the allegations involve issues of emotional manipulation, extortion, and blackmail, complaints have been raised against the airline and the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).

What Actually Happened?

As per reports, the two cabin crew staff, Mst Maury and Khadija Sultana Shimu, targeted wealthy passengers by promising marriage and relationships and then exploiting them

• Targeting Businessmen: The accused allegedly focused on affluent men, including businessmen, doctors, and executives.
• Manipulation Tactics: Flight schedules were reportedly adjusted to ensure frequent meetings with selected victims.
• Exploitation for Gifts: Victims claim they were asked for expensive items such as iPhones, diamond rings, and wedding-related cash.
• Romance Promises: Both attendants allegedly promised marriage or serious relationships.
• Abrupt Endings: After obtaining valuables, the relationships were ended abruptly, leaving victims shocked.
• Blackmail Allegations: Intimate photos and videos were allegedly used to threaten victims.

A Qatari businessman, Nasir Uddin, also made a complaint stating that he had met Maury in October 2024 in a luxury hotel in Doha. Nasir said Maury initiated romantic interest and even played with her flight timings so as to run into each other multiple times on business-class flights. She is said to have asked over time for costly presents, which he gave her, before suddenly ending their relationship at a Dhaka hotel on August 7, 2025. "She stole an iPhone 16 in pink, presents, and my pride," he informed Jago News 24, also stating that her ally, Ryan, was said to have harassed him into silence.

Another victim, Omar Faruk Chowdhury, who is a Bangladeshi businessman, alleged that Shimu cheated him in the name of marriage. Omar alleged he met Shimu on Facebook in October 2024 and flew with Biman flights to see her. She demanded Tk 1.62 crore for wedding preparations, cash, gold, and a diamond ring worth Tk 1.5 lakh, Shimu allegedly. Omar refused, alleging that Shimu threatened him with intimate photos. A criminal complaint was lodged with the Dhaka court on July 20, 2025.

Airline Responds

Biman Bangladesh Airlines confirmed that it had received complaints against Maury and Shimu. ABM Rawshan Kabir, Public Relations General Manager of Biman, stated, "A preliminary investigation is ongoing. If the allegations are found true, departmental and legal action, including termination, will be taken."

Maury has protested the claims, stating the businessman asked her to marry him first and that she broke up with him because he was a heavy drinker and had an unpredictable temperament. The investigations are still in progress, and no ruling has been made.

The allegations point to a growing concern over romance scams involving airline personnel, by which individuals are devastated financially and emotionally; the scandal must also extend to the airlines for causing a maligning of their image. Maury and Shimu's cases establish stricter internal controls within airlines and awareness among frequent fliers. Victims and targets are urged by the authorities to report any suspicious behavior immediately to prevent financial and emotional exploitation.
