A new viral clip of US President Donald Trump's golf outing at his Turnberry resort in Scotland has set cheating allegations alight once again, after it seemed to catch him on camera getting his caddie to discreetly position a ball in a favourable location closer to a bunker. The video, quickly shared online across social media sites such as X (formerly known as Twitter), has sparked controversy over Trump's golf morals, with many accusing him of once again "bending the rules.

The viral clip, filmed apparently during Trump's 26–27 July 2025 golf trip to the seaside resort he owns, captures a man thought to be a caddie quietly placing a golf ball on the edge of the rough. Later on, Trump can be seen driving up in a golf cart and lining up his shot from the relocated ball. While the video did not display the former president indeed making the shot, audiences were quick to associate the sequence as proof that he intended to break the rules. Within hours of going public, the clip had garnered millions of views, with #CommanderInCheat, #GolfGate, and #TrumpCheats trending worldwide. Comedians as well as critics ridiculed the moment, with one commenting, "LMAO for those who believe Trump wins club championships straight up…watch this caddie magic."

Another comment said, "Trump over here adjusting the lie, not the economy." Nevertheless, there were some users who came to Trump's defense, observing that the video does not capture him hitting the ball. "It's not cheating if there's no swing," posted one user. Others insisted that the release of the full, unedited video be made to authenticate the order of events.

Not The First Time: History Of Golf Controversies Haunts Trump

This is far from the first time Trump has been accused of dubious golfing behavior. Renowned sportswriter Rick Reilly, in his book "Commander in Cheat: How Golf Explains Trump," detailed several instances wherein Trump supposedly falsified scores, moved his balls around, or took liberal mulligans on the course. Reilly once quoted a retired Trump co-worker from his casino days as saying of Trump, in a joking manner, that Trump steps up "every shot but the tee shot." Hollywood star Samuel L. Jackson, who said he played golf with Trump, also blamed him for cheating. "Oh, I'm the better golfer, for sure. I don't cheat," Jackson said in a previous interview with journalists.

Trump's trip to Turnberry, his upscale golf resort in South Ayrshire was part of a whirlwind overseas visit after securing a significant tariff deal with the European Union. The top-level diplomatic news aside, the trip was beset on the streets of Scotland by protests. Demonstrators in Edinburgh and outside Turnberry criticised Trump's policies and demanded that UK officials stay away from the visit. Security was close at hand near the golf course, with several Secret Service and British police units manning strategic locations. However, at least two demonstrators apparently did penetrate the golf course boundary, eliciting a quick police reaction.
