Gatlinburg Accident Today: A huge multi-vehicle collision in downtown Gatlinburg on Sunday afternoon injured six people, prompting a massive-scale emergency response and an investigation still underway by local and state authorities. The accident happened about 4:14 p.m. local time on Parkway's 700 block between traffic signals 6 and 8, the Gatlinburg Police Department and witnesses reported. Five vehicles were involved in the collision, some of which were left badly damaged and even shoved onto the sidewalk. The road remained closed for a few hours as responders attended to the scene.

The authorities confirmed six individuals were hospitalized as a result of the accident. Three of the victims suffered severe injuries and were flown via Lifestar helicopter to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. The other three victims were taken in ambulances. To date, there have been no reported fatalities, and the status of the injured is unknown. Although the Tennessee Highway Patrol and Gatlinburg Police have not made a final conclusion on the cause of the accident, witness statements published on social media indicate that the driver of one of the vehicles might have experienced a medical condition, perhaps a heart attack or seizure, that caused the pileup.

One witness wrote on Facebook, "A woman experienced a heart attack at the red light and died. This is how this occurred!" A second reported that the driver struck several cars and pedestrians after losing control. But authorities said they have not made any official reports of deaths or medical emergency reports, asking people to wait for confirmed information. A spokesperson for the City of Gatlinburg said, "We are working closely with all responding agencies to ensure the safety of everyone involved and to determine exactly what happened." The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) verified that traffic along the Parkway was stopped for several hours, as emergency personnel treated the injured and removed the wreckage.
