US President Donald Trump tripped while boarding the steps of Air Force One Sunday, unleashing a social media backlash full of irony, humor, and reminisce about prior moments when Joe Biden tripped over something. The visit took place after Trump had spoken to the press in Hagerstown, Maryland, where he was questioned about whether he would use the Insurrection Act to address the mounting protests in Los Angeles after recent immigration raids. Trump, who was accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, momentarily lost his balance on the stairs but recovered immediately. Yet, the moment was enough to go viral on the internet, particularly considering Trump's past, where he ridiculed President Joe Biden for analogous stumbles.
'Time to Get Old Man Trump a Wheelchair': Internet Reacts
Moments of Trump's trip were all over social media in minutes. Political analyst Ron Filipkowski commented on X (formerly Twitter), "Time to get Old Man Trump fitted for a wheelchair." Others joined in, with law professor Jason DeSanto calling it “more beta energy,” while political strategist Marco Frieri remarked, “Cannot wait for all the books and wall-to-wall coverage.” A viral quote from one user summed up the mood: “It’s funny how the words he uses as an attack on others always seem to come back around on him.” Whereas another user commented, "These Air Force One stairs are faulty. President Trump was the first to fall victim, immediately followed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio."
Flashback: Trump Teased Biden About 2023 Air Force One Plummet
Netizens were quick to remind Trump of his previous comments. In 2023, when Biden tripped on a flight of stairs while attending a graduation ceremony, Trump had commented, "Joe Biden can't even walk up a flight of stairs… We have somebody that doesn't have a clue representing us." Another user reacted to Sunday's incident by saying, "Hypocrisy at its finest."
The slip came shortly after Trump commented on the violent protests against immigration in Los Angeles, where protesters have burned vehicles and engaged with police over mass raids targeting suspected illegal immigrants and gang members. Speaking to reporters before his departure to Camp David, Trump was questioned about using the Insurrection Act. He replied, "Depends on whether or not there's an insurrection." "No, but you have violent individuals. And we're not going to let them get away with it. "We're going to have soldiers everywhere. We're not going to let this happen to our country. We're not going to let our country be ripped apart like it was under Biden," he added.
