Trump-Musk Feud: In the latest twist in the escalating feud between tech billionaire Elon Musk and US President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson revealed that Musk changed his phone number after a major fallout over a controversial tax-and-spending bill. Speaking to Pod Force One, Johnson disclosed that his efforts to contact Musk went unanswered—only to later discover the Tesla CEO had switched numbers following the dispute.
“I sent him a long text message, and then his phone number changed, because after the blow-up, something happened with his,” Johnson told the outlet. “I realised I was sending it out into the ether somewhere and he never read it, so I look forward to meeting with him in person," he added. "We got to make that right."
The fallout appears to have been triggered by Musk's public outrage over the bill that President Trump signed earlier this month. The legislation, which cuts taxes for the wealthy while slashing federal programs like healthcare and food assistance, drew sharp criticism from Musk, who called it a “disgusting abomination” and warned it would increase the US deficit by 2.5 trillion Dollars.

A Rift Fueled By Policy And Personal Jabs
While the legislation served as the catalyst, tensions quickly escalated into personal territory. Musk, once seen as a Trump ally, accused the president of undermining his earlier work at the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency. Trump countered, suggesting Musk’s anger stemmed from cuts to electric vehicle subsidies—benefits that have long supported Musk’s ventures. On June 5, the feud reached new heights when Musk accused President Trump of being mentioned in the Epstein files, tweeting: "Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files," Musk wrote, adding, "That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!"
Although Musk later expressed regret over his posts and Trump insisted there were “no hard feelings,” the damage seemed done. Shortly after the bill's passage, Musk declared plans to form a new “American Party,” decrying what he called a one-party system and calling the bill’s waste “bankrupting.” President Trump dismissed the idea as “ridiculous” and even threatened to “take a look at” deporting Musk to South Africa, where the billionaire was born.
Mike Johnson Plays Mediator
Amid the increasingly bitter exchanges, Speaker Mike Johnson is attempting to broker peace between the two high-profile figures. He said communication with Musk continues via third parties when needed, and he hopes a reconciliation is possible.
“Frankly, I think the president was of that mind as well, but there’s some tension there,” Johnson said, adding that Musk’s emotional response was disproportionate. "We can't fix this stuff overnight, but we have a plan to do it, and I think that's going to be pleasing to everybody who's worried about our deficit and our debt," he told the outlet.

While Johnson praised Musk’s genius, he emphasized that the billionaire might not fully grasp the complexities of legislative strategy. "He does things that I can't even fathom, but one of his fields of expertise was not necessarily crafting legislation, right?" Johnson said. "I have great respect for what he's done, and I just want him to fully understand what we're doing and remind him of the strategy. This is a long-term play."
