South Carolina Shooting Update: In yet another tragic incident of gun violence in the United States, four people were killed and at least 20 others were injured when a mass shooting broke out early Sunday at a popular bar on St. Helena Island, South Carolina.
According to local media outlets, the shooting occurred at Willie’s Bar and Grill, a popular local hangout, shortly after midnight. Deputies from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire and arrived to find multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds.
Chaos And Panic As Shots Rang Out
Witnesses described scenes of panic as patrons rushed for cover.“Multiple victims and witnesses ran to the nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gunshots,” the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter). “This is a tragic and difficult incident for everyone,” the sheriff’s office added. “We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate this incident. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their loved ones.”
Authorities said to local media that a “large crowd” was present when the incident unfolded. By the time officers secured the area, four people had been pronounced dead at the scene. At least 20 others sustained injuries, with four listed in critical condition at nearby hospitals.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. No immediate arrests were reported, and officials have not disclosed any possible motive for the attack.
Lawmaker Expresses Shock, Calls For Unity
US Representative Nancy Mace, who represents parts of South Carolina’s coastal region, expressed her heartbreak over the shooting.“COMPLETELY HEARTBROKEN to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County,” Mace posted on X. “Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence.”
Authorities are appealing to the public for any information related to the shooting and urging witnesses to come forward. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has joined local investigators to assist in gathering evidence and identifying suspects.
The tragedy adds to a growing list of mass shootings across the United States this year. Recent incidents in Mississippi and Illinois have raised renewed concerns over gun safety and nightlife security.For residents of the small coastal community, Sunday’s violence has left deep scars. St. Helena Island, known for its serene landscapes and tight-knit population, is rarely associated with such horrific acts.
