A 60-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly opened fire on a Sydney street, shooting up to 100 rounds at vehicles and police cars in what police have called a "serious and terrifying" attack. The attack happened on Sunday evening in Croydon Park, Sydney's inner west, with gunfire heard between 7:45 pm and 9:30 pm along Georges River Road. The gunman, according to police, shot randomly from a residential unit over a business, at motorists on the road, including police vehicles.
The area was put into lockdown as tactical teams and emergency responders made their way to the area. Witnesses described hearing rapid strings of gunfire, sparks, and flashes illuminating the street. "It was extremely loud and 'bang, bang, bang' … it was like out of a film," said Tadgh, a local resident who was watching a rugby match in the area.

Office worker Joe Azar, who was working across the street, said he initially mistook the sounds for fireworks until he saw a car windshield and a bus stop shatter. “It was frantic. It all happened so quickly, so I couldn’t comprehend what was going on,” he told The Sydney Morning Herald.
Police Under Fire
Body-worn camera footage captured how close officers came to being struck as they scrambled for cover. “You can hear numerous gunshots, and certainly impacts not too far from the camera,” said NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon, adding that one officer targeted during the shooting had only graduated from the academy five weeks earlier.
Tactical police stormed the unit and arrested the 60-year-old suspect, who is now under police guard at Bankstown Hospital. Two rifles were seized from his apartment. He has not yet been formally charged.
