US President Donald Trump issued a tough threat to Hamas on Sunday, saying that the militant organisation would face "complete obliteration" if it does not give up rule over Gaza under his 20-point peace proposal. The warning was issued mere hours before a Sunday 6 pm Washington deadline for Hamas to adhere to the US-led initiative. “This is their last chance. There will be peace one way or another,” Trump told CNN, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
On the other hand, during an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasised that fighting in Gaza "has not yet" ended, even with advances on hostage negotiations. Rubio noted that several critical issues, including logistics for hostages’ release and longer-term governance arrangements, remain unresolved.
“There can’t be a war going on in the middle of it,” Rubio said, urging Israel to halt bombing operations to facilitate the safe release of hostages. The immediate goal, he explained, is to secure the release of all captives in exchange for Israel pulling back to its mid-August positions, known as the “yellow line.”
Hamas Response Brings Hope Of Ceasefire
Trump's peace plan, supported by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, will bring the two-year Gaza war to an end, achieve stability, and see the release of hostages. Although Hamas has accepted in principle to enter into negotiations, the militant organisation has not yet agreed to abide by every part of the proposal.
The proposal calls for an instant ceasefire and the establishment of a temporary board of government to manage Gaza's post-war transition, headed by Trump and other international personalities, including former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Trump’s Peace Plan: Key Provisions
• Instant ceasefire once accepted by Israel and Hamas.
• Freedom of Israeli hostages within 72 hours of public acceptance.
• Temporary administration of Gaza by a technocratic body under international supervision.
• Assurance that no Gaza resident would be displaced if terms are accepted.
While Netanyahu has endorsed the plan, the precise timeline for implementation remains unclear. Hamas has expressed willingness to release hostages but has not clarified its position on disarmament, a central component of Trump’s proposal.

Although Trump's proposal signifies a big diplomatic effort, it is merely the start of a sophisticated process. Political calculations both in Israel and Palestine, such as Netanyahu's internal coalition pressures and Hamas's imperative to keep relevance, introduce more uncertainty.
Israeli and Hamas negotiators are set to meet in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, to complete the technical aspects of the peace proposal. The next few days are pivotal to gauge Hamas's seriousness and the viability of a long-term truce, as both remain under the microscope of intense international pressure.
With war still a reality but diplomatic momentum gaining force, the world watches anxiously for a breakthrough that may finally quell the catastrophic war in Gaza.
