US President Donald Trump's microblogging website, Truth Social, is again under threat as its membership rolls continue to dip despite big-name endorsements and Trump's regular daily usage for big announcements. The platform's declining popularity suffered another blow when Tesla and X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk said he had "never heard of" Truth Social. Musk's scornful comment was made hours after Trump criticized him for starting a new political party that would potentially splinter conservative votes leading up to the 2024 elections. "What's Truth Social?" Musk tweeted on X, followed by another tweet saying, "Never heard of it."
Falling Behind Big Tech Rivals
Released in February 2022 by Trump Media & Technology Group and T Media Tech LLC, Truth Social was marketed as a rival to so-called "big tech tyranny." Yet data released recently finds the site lagging behind established titans such as Facebook and TikTok. Though Truth Social counts around 5 million active users, Facebook and TikTok have around 1 billion and 3 billion monthly active users respectively. Truth Social has an average of around 25.5 million monthly visits, according to Similarweb, but loses almost half its users within two months.
About 49 per cent of users do not return to the app after 61 days, and a typical user spends fewer than two days a week on the platform. Website visits also fell by over 39 per cent year-on-year, dropping to just over 4 million per month between May 2023 and April 2024. But traffic did briefly spike in early 2024 when Trump Media became public, data from several research firms verified to CNBC.

Who's Still On Truth Social?
Even with declining users, the site is still popular among conservative politicians and Trump supporters. In addition to Trump, influential names such as Donald Trump Jr, Dan Bongino, Eric Trump, Sean Hannity, Dinesh D'Souza, Devin Nunes, and Marjorie Taylor Greene regularly post on the platform. Interestingly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also signed up to the platform in 2019. Posting for the first time, Modi indicated that he was "delighted" to be on Truth Social and posted a photograph with Trump from the Howdy Modi event in Houston, Texas.
Experts cited by NDTV say the platform has largely become an echo chamber for Republican voters, with little crossover appeal to Democrats or independent users. Current demographics show 57 per cent of users are men and 43 per cent are women. While Trump continues to use Truth Social as his primary channel for policy announcements and campaign updates, the platform’s future hinges on its ability to attract and keep new users in a highly competitive social media market.
