Starbucks store closures: Starbucks Corporation has announced that it will shut down hundreds of its stores across the United States and Canada as part of a sweeping restructuring exercise aimed at reviving falling sales. The company said the decision, which will impact around 1 per cent of its North American footprint, is part of its “Back to Starbucks” plan to bring the chain back to its traditional roots.

The coffee chain expects to end the 2025 fiscal year with nearly 18,300 stores across the US and Canada, according to Newsweek. This compares with about 18,734 outlets it reported earlier this year.

400 Stores To Shut, Layoffs Underway

The closures, estimated at roughly 400 company-operated stores, will be accompanied by layoffs of about 900 corporate employees. The company has already confirmed that some high-profile locations, including its flagship unionised roastery in Seattle, will shut down.

In a letter to employees, Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol said, “We identified coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance. These locations will be closed.” Niccol, who took over in September 2024 after turning around Chipotle, has unveiled a USD 1 billion restructuring plan aimed at cutting costs, redesigning stores, and winning back customers who have drifted away amid rising prices and growing competition.

Earlier this summer, Starbucks had also announced that all its pickup-only stores, more than 90 outlets across 20 states, would either be shut down or converted into full cafés by the end of 2026. That includes the University of Texas West Campus location in Austin, which will reopen as a regular coffeehouse. The company said these steps are intended to reinforce its identity as a welcoming “third place” between home and work, rather than a purely transactional stop for mobile orders.

Competition, Costs And Consumer Pushback

Starbucks has reported six consecutive quarters of declining same-store sales in the US. The slump to shifting consumer habits after the pandemic, intensifying competition from rivals such as Dutch Bros and Blue Bottle, and widespread pushback against higher prices.

A recent UBS survey found that more than 70 per cent of respondents blamed rising menu costs for cutting back on visits. Customers with annual incomes below USD 100,000 were the most likely to reduce spending at Starbucks.

The closures have also sparked criticism from Starbucks Workers United, which represents more than 12,000 baristas. The union accused the company of undermining organising efforts by shutting unionized stores, though Starbucks has denied this. Workers at closed Chicago and Seattle outlets staged protests this week, insisting that employees are the ones who “bring customers into stores” and demanding reassignment opportunities.
