US Winter Storm Alert: Large parts of the United States are bracing for severe winter weather after the National Weather Service (NWS) issued winter storm warnings and advisories across multiple states, including Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Authorities have warned of heavy snowfall, damaging winds, and dangerous travel conditions between Sunday, December 7, and Monday, December 8, 2025, as Arctic air continues to plunge southward.

According to NWS alerts issued on Sunday, snowfall accumulation of more than 10 inches is likely in several regions, while wind gusts could reach 65 miles per hour in high-altitude and open areas. Officials have cautioned that conditions could turn life-threatening for anyone caught unprepared outdoors.

Alaska Faces Harshest Conditions

Alaska is expected to bear the brunt of the storm system, with prolonged snowfall and powerful winds forecast through Monday night. In Hyder, snow accumulation is expected to range between 16 and 20 inches. Skagway, Haines Borough, and Klukwan could receive between 12 and 18 inches of snow, accompanied by wind speeds up to 50 mph.

The Juneau Weather Office warned that gusty winds may knock down tree branches and cause power interruptions. Wind chills near White Pass are expected to drop to 20 degrees below zero, raising serious frostbite risks within minutes of exposure.

Midwest And Plains Struggle With Slippery Roads

In the Midwest, heavy snow is sweeping across Iowa, Wisconsin and parts of Illinois. The NWS office in La Crosse reported that snow is moving from west to east, making roads in northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin slippery and snow-covered.

Floyd, Chickasaw, and Fayette counties in Iowa remain under a winter storm warning, while cities such as Dysart, Iowa Falls, and Gladbrook are also on alert. Illinois counties, including Carroll and Whiteside, are grappling with low visibility and hazardous road conditions due to overnight snowfall.

Dangerous Conditions In Colorado And Wyoming

Colorado’s Elkhead and Park Mountains are likely to receive up to three inches of snow with wind gusts reaching 35 mph. Travel has been termed very difficult to nearly impossible through much of the day.

In Wyoming, winter storm warnings are active for the Sierra Madre and Snowy Ranges. Snow accumulation between five and ten inches is expected initially, while overall totals in some exposed areas could reach up to two feet. Winds up to 65 mph are likely to cause whiteout conditions and severe disorientation risks for hikers and snowmobilers.

Authorities Urge Caution And Preparedness

Weather officials across states have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for power outages and road blockages. Motorists are being advised to carry emergency kits including food, water, flashlights, and warm clothing.
