Wolf Point Shooting:An active shooter situation in Wolf Point, Montana, has put the small town on edge as authorities urge residents to remain indoors. The suspect, identified as Ethan Murphy, is still at large as of late Sunday night, September 28.

The Fort Peck Tribal Law Enforcement issued a shelter-in-place order at 8:50 pm local time following reports of gunfire in the community. Residents and businesses were told to lock all doors and windows and remain vigilant until further notice. Officials have described Murphy as armed and potentially dangerous, but no physical description or possible motive has been released.

Wolf Point, with a population of about 2,500, is the largest town on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation and serves as a central hub for the Assiniboine and Sioux tribes. The area has faced growing concerns over gun violence in recent years, prompting tribal leaders to call for stronger federal support for local law enforcement.

Police say the incident began around 8:40 pm when officers responded to reports of shots fired. Despite an immediate response, Murphy managed to flee the scene and remains at large. Authorities are urging residents to call 911 immediately if they see the suspect.

The incident has shaken Wolf Point, a town already grappling with recent gun-related crimes. Local residents report heavy police presence in several neighborhoods, with officers patrolling streets and checkpoints set up on key routes.

Tribal leaders reiterated their demand for increased federal assistance to address the surge in violent crime on reservations. “Our communities deserve to feel safe,” one tribal spokesperson said, emphasising the need for stronger partnerships between federal agencies and tribal police.

Separate Shooting In Michigan

The Montana incident follows another tragic shooting earlier in the day in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, where a gunman attacked a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The suspect, 40-year-old Iraq War veteran Thomas Jacob Sanford, rammed his vehicle into the church, opened fire with an assault rifle, and set the building ablaze using gasoline. The attack left four people dead and eight injured before Sanford was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police.
