Michigan church shooting: A tragic shooting incident rocked a church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, on Sunday morning, leaving one dead, nine people injured, and the building engulfed in flames. The suspect was shot down by law enforcement officers, and officials have assured that there is no further threat to the public.
According to the Grand Blanc Township Police Department, the attack took place at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on McCandlish Road shortly before 11 a.m. local time. The police confirmed on Facebook that “there has been an active shooter at the church… There are multiple victims, and the shooter is down. There is NO threat to the public at this time. The church is actively on fire.”
Grand Blanc police later confirmed that one person was killed and at least nine others sustained injuries in the gunfire. Victims were transported to nearby hospitals, though the condition of several remains critical. The shooting occurred about 50 miles north of Detroit, where the suburban community of Grand Blanc hosts an active congregation of the Mormon church.

Fire crews and emergency responders rushed to the site as thick smoke was seen billowing from the church. Videos shared on social media showed the roof of the building collapsing as firefighters battled the flames. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area to ensure emergency services could operate safely.
Worshippers Left In Shock
While police have not released the exact number of casualties, several people are reported to have sustained gunshot wounds in the attack. Victims were quickly transported to nearby hospitals, though the condition of those injured remains unclear. Officials also announced the establishment of a reunification site for families. “For people on site, the reunification site is the pavilion to the north,” the police said in a public statement.
The church, which serves a large local congregation, is a key center for weekly worship, community service, and faith-based activities. Residents expressed shock at the violence. “This is a quiet neighborhood. We never imagined something like this could happen here, especially in a place of worship,” said a local resident who lives near McCandlish Road.
Authorities are investigating whether the blaze was directly linked to the shooting or deliberately set by the gunman. Fire marshals were seen coordinating with police officers at the scene as the building continued to burn through the afternoon. Grand Blanc Township officials assured that resources from both local and county-level law enforcement agencies are being deployed to manage the aftermath.
Similar Incident In North Carolina
The Michigan tragedy comes just hours after another mass shooting was reported near the American Fish Company restaurant in Southport, North Carolina, where gunfire from a vessel in the yacht basin left multiple people dead and others wounded.
Grand Blanc police have not released the identity of the shooter or the motive behind the attack. Federal and state investigators are expected to join local authorities to probe the case. For now, the priority remains supporting the victims and their families while ensuring the fire at the church is fully contained. “This is a devastating day for our community,” an official said, urging residents to stay calm and cooperate with authorities.
