In an inspiring blend of determination and digital innovation, a 35-year-old woman from Delaware, USA, has successfully paid off more than half of her massive credit card debt, amounting to over USD 23,000 (approximately ₹19.69 lakh), with the help of ChatGPT.
Jennifer Allan, a realtor and content creator, told Newsweek that while she earned a decent income, her financial troubles stemmed from a lack of financial education. “Not because I don’t make enough, but because I was never taught financial literacy,” she said. “I avoided budgeting and figured if I just kept working harder, I could out-earn the problem.”
Debt Spirals After Motherhood
Her financial situation worsened after she gave birth to her daughter. Emotionally overwhelmed, she turned to credit cards just to keep the household running. “We weren’t living lavishly, we were just surviving,” Jennifer shared. “But the debt piled up while I wasn’t looking.”
Determined to take control of her finances, Jennifer launched a 30-day personal finance challenge using ChatGPT. Each day, she asked the chatbot for practical tips to save money, earn extra income, and track her progress.
The advice was surprisingly straightforward but effective. ChatGPT suggested canceling unused subscriptions, selling unused items, creating budget plans, and exploring side gigs on platforms like Facebook Marketplace.
Rediscovering ₹8.5 Lakh In Dormant Account
One of the AI's prompts asked Jennifer to review her inactive financial accounts. During this exercise, she discovered a dormant brokerage account holding $10,000 (approximately ₹8.5 lakh). On another day, she was advised to plan meals using only pantry items, cutting her grocery expenses by nearly ₹50,000.
“It wasn’t some big financial hack,” she said. “It was the act of facing it every day, tracking it, talking about it, looking at it. I stopped being afraid of my numbers.”
By the end of the 30-day challenge, Jennifer had paid off USD 12,078.93, nearly ₹10.3 lakh, effectively slashing her debt in half. Motivated by the progress, she now plans to start a second 30-day challenge to become entirely debt-free.
Her message to others struggling with finances, “Don’t wait until you feel ready or smart enough to start. You don’t have to know all the answers. You just have to stop pretending it’s not happening.”
