US Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris is leading against former US president and Republican candidate Donald Trump as she gears up for the upcoming US Presidential elections in November this year. The latest ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll shows Harris leading with a narrow margin in the race for the White House.

The Democrats will get a significant boost from Harris's progress as their national convention gets underway tonight. She will officially accept her nomination as the Democratic presidential nominee at the convention.

According to the survey, Harris stands at 49 per cent, Trump is not far behind at 45 per cent. At the same time, the AP-NORC poll shows that favourable views of Harris have risen to 48 per cent. This is a significant rise from 39 per cent at the beginning of the summer before President Joe Biden’s poor performance in a presidential debate against former President Donald Trump and his gaffes ultimately led him to drop out of the presidential race.

However, Trump still leads on three specific issues including inflation, economy, and immigration. These issues can act as a game changer for the race to the White House. Earlier in July, Trump took the lead with 43 per cent, while Biden was at 42 per cent and Robert F Kennedy at 9 per cent.

Indian-origin US Vice President Kamala Harris was born in California to Shyama Gopalan, a Tamil biologist and Jamaican-American father, Donald J Harris, who was a professor. Kamala’s selection as Vice President in 2020 was a landmark achievement, making her the first woman, the first African American, and the first Asian American to hold the office.
