The water level of the Ganga river rose significantly in Prayagraj on Thursday due to heavy rainfall and strong winds blowing at speeds of 40 to 60 km/h. As a result, nearly 200 boats tied at four ghats in the Sangam area were lost.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, Pappu Lal Nishad, president of the Prayagraj Navik Sangh, said that the combination of strong water currents and powerful winds caused extensive damage. The affected ghats include Kali Ghat, Bajrangbali Ghat, Lal Sadak, and others.

He informed ADM (City) Satyam Mishra about the extent of the losses suffered by the boatmen.

A boat operator, Rakesh said, "The waves are rising so much that many boats have sunk. All poor people here are worried. Many can't find their boats. Such a strong storm has come for the first time."

Another boat operator, Satish said, "I have never seen such a storm. It has been going on since last night. Waves like the sea are forming in the river. Everyone here has suffered a lot of damage."

According to Jal Police in-charge JP Sahani, several boats were reported missing from the Sangam area. Efforts were underway to retrieve those that had capsized in the water. 

 “The district administration has been informed about the development and a list of boatmen who had suffered a loss is being prepared by the Navik Sangh,” he said, according to the HT report. 

According to records from the Flood Control Room, after a slight decline on Wednesday evening, the water levels of both the Ganga and Yamuna rivers remained above the 81-meter mark on Thursday. At 4 PM, the Ganga at Phaphamau measured 81.43 meters, while the Yamuna at Naini stood at 81.12 meters.

As per reports, 1,27,539 cusecs of water were released from the Kanpur Barrage at 8 AM on Thursday. Additionally, 48,479 cusecs were released from Haridwar, and 31,900 cusecs from the Narora Barrage.
