Agra Metro Update: In a major step towards the operation of the Agra Metro, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) on Saturday placed the first pier cap on the second corridor at Agra Cantt. The officials had stated that the metro line would provide relief to thousands of commuters by cutting the travel time significantly and reducing the traffic congestion, as it would connect Agra Cantt with Kalindi Vihar, two key areas of the city.
Earlier last month, the UPMRC had stated that the much-awaited second corridor of the Agra metro will have 14 elevated stations. It further stated that all the metro stations are under construction and the work is likely to be completed by mid-2026. The authority stated that the second corridor will provide relief to the residents as it will pass through some of the key areas of the city and cut the travel time.
"The pier caps are being constructed using precast technology at the casting yard located in Dauki. Each pier cap weighs 65 tons, with dimensions of 9.6m in length, 2.9m in width, and 1.8m in depth. The placement of these caps involves the use of a 400-ton crane," a statement from the authority stated.
Apart from this, the authority also stated that the first corridor of the Agra metro is being built between Taj East Gate and Sikandara. While six metro stations on the route are elevated, seven stations are being built underground. It further stated that a 6-km-long section is already operational to promote tourism in the city. The stretch connects key heritage sites such as the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, promoting public transportation among the tourists.
They further stated that trial runs have already been completed on four underground stations of Agra Metro, adding that the full operation is likely to commence by December this year.
