Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday made headlines after his Facebook page was suspended abruptly. The SP chief has approximately 8.6 million followers on this page.
It was not immediately clear if the suspension was due to a technical glitch or for some other reason. The development was shared by Samajwadi Party's MLA from Sardhana Atul Pradhan.
Pradhan lashed out at the government, accusing them for the suspension. Taking to Facebook, Pradhan said, "The government cannot remove Akhilesh Yadav from the public's hearts by shutting down his account. He is a popular leader. Long live Akhilesh Yadav!"
The susspension drew condemnation and fierce reaction against Facebook and the government from Samajwadi Party supporters and leaders.
SP leader Pooja Shukla also claimed on social media platform X that the Kannauj MP's Facebook page has been shut down.
Hitting out at the Facebook, she wrote, "Facebook had crossed its limits– it suspended Akhilesh Yadav's official page without any warning or notice. This is no ordinary account – this is Akhilesh Yadav, the voice of millions! Facebook must understand its limits – it cannot suppress democracy."
SP spokesperson Manoj Kaka wrote that the deactivation of the Facebook page of Shri Akhilesh Yadav, the national president of India's third largest party and a prominent advocate of socialism, justice, and democratic values worldwide, demonstrates that even Meta, Meta India's commitment to free expression, has now become a slave to governments. We appeal to Meta to reactivate Honorable Akhilesh Yadav's page as soon as possible.
