Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh is set to receive a new name as councilors in a Municipal Corporation meeting unanimously approved to change of its name to "Harigarh". The approval for the renaming of the district located 342 kilometres northwest of the state capital Lucknow now awaits approval from the UP government's Cabinet.

The city's mayor Prashant Singhal on Tuesday said, "Yesterday in the meeting a proposal was put forward by a councilor Sanjay Pandit to change the name of Aligarh to Harigarh. Which was unanimously passed by all the councilors. Now it will be sent forward. I hope that very soon the government will take it into cognizance and fulfill our demand to change the name of Aligarh to Harigarh."

Earlier on August 21, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya during his visit to Aligarh had hinted about renaming the city. Raising slogans of "Jai Shree Ram" during a speech, he addressed the crowd as "people of Harigarh" indicating that a name change was on the way. The people had expressed their displeasure to this.

The proposal now awaits a green light from the Yogi government which has changed several city and village names in the BJP-ruled state. The most prominent one was that of Allahabad which was renamed to Pragyaraj in January 2019.

A state government holds the authority to change the name of any city within the state. The resolution after the approval of the state government will then be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs for its assent.

In connection to the name changes, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said, "We did what we felt was good. We renamed Mughal Sarai as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar, Allahabad as Prayagraj, and Faizabad district as Ayodhya district. Where there is a need, the government will take the steps required."
