Nafees Biryani, a close aide of slain gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad, died on Monday after suffering a heart attack in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj. Nafees Biryani, aged 40, was also accused in the Umesh Pal murder case. Police said Nafees suffered a major heart attack in Naini Jail on Sunday night and was taken to a nearby hospital where he died hours later.  

Nafees, who was wanted for the Umesh Pal murder case had a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head. He was arrested on November 23 after a shootout with the Uttar Pradesh Police near Prayagraj. The UP Police received a tip that Nafees and one of his accomplices were heading to his Khuldabad house in Prayagraj from Nawabganj’s Anapur.

When the police began checking near the Pratapgarh-Prayagraj border, Nafees and his accomplice fired at them. In the exchange of fire, Nafees was wounded in the leg. Police nabbed the injured Nafees but the other suspect fled into the bushes.

Notably, Nafees was a suspect in the murder of Umesh Pal, who was the main witness in the murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal which took place in Prayagraj in 2005.   

Earlier on April 15, two prime accused in the Umesh Pal murder case Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead on live television near Calvin Hospital in Prayagraj while being taken for medical check-up.
