The electricity department of Deoria district has decided to install smart meters at the homes of its 4.72 lakh consumers. The installation work of smart meters, which works in a fully automotive mode, will start in the last week of December and will be done in three phases.
The first phase will cover 45,000 consumers of the city, the second phase will cover the municipal bodies and the third phase will cover the rural areas.
Smart meters are prepaid meters that have to be recharged like mobile phones. They do not require meter readers or bill calculations. They automatically cut off the power supply when the recharge ends. This will prevent the accumulation of dues and ensure timely payment by the consumers.
The electricity department’s superintending engineer, GC Yadav, said that the smart meters will provide state-of-the-art facilities and benefit both the department and the consumers. He said that the smart meters will also help in updating the systems and improving the efficiency of the power distribution.

Last month, the Union Ministry of Power sent a team to inspect smart meters in power companies after receiving continuous complaints from consumers. The team took feedback from some consumers to check their satisfaction levels.
The team’s report, which was sent to the Managing Director of Power Corporation, stated that smart meters have failed in the purpose for which they were installed.
The ministry found many flaws in the smart meters installed at 12 lakh consumers in Uttar Pradesh and instructed them to get the smart meters fixed to resolve the problems faced by the consumers.
