The Election Commission, using special software, has identified a significant number of duplicate voters in the Panchayat electoral rolls across Uttar Pradesh, with Gorakhpur alone accounting for 5.26 lakh such entries. A detailed list of these voters has been sent to the district administration, and Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have begun the process of verification.

According to Deputy District Election Officer and ADM (Finance & Revenue) Vineet Singh, BLOs are conducting physical verification of the suspected duplicate voters. So far, 7,245 voters have been verified, including 1,290 on Friday. The list comprises names with identical details, such as name, father’s, husband’s, or mother’s name, and gender, appearing multiple times in the same or different Gram Panchayats.

During verification, if a voter is found to be ordinarily residing at their current address, BLOs are recording the last four digits of their Aadhaar card. This will ensure that the voter’s name remains in only one Panchayat, while duplicate entries will be removed. The list of suspected duplicate voters has been made available at the BLO, development block, Tehsil, and district levels for public inspection.

The ADM has appealed to voters to cooperate by providing the last four digits of their Aadhaar number to their respective BLOs, helping to make the electoral roll accurate and error-free.

Under the comprehensive revision drive for the three-tier Panchayat electoral roll, conducted between August 19 and September 29, 4,63,678 new voters were added in Gorakhpur, while 2,46,655 names of deceased or relocated voters were deleted. This results in a net increase of 2,17,023 voters, taking the total to 29,23,715 registered voters.
