The distribution of Gharauni (property ownership certificates) will be completed across all villages in Uttar Pradesh by December 2025. The Revenue Department has instructed officials to accelerate the process. So far, the Gharauni preparation work has been completed in 76,884 villages, with over one crore certificates already distributed.
Under the Central Government’s Ownership Scheme, 90,573 villages in the state have been identified for this initiative. The project was first launched in Barabanki on April 24, 2020, before being expanded to 37 districts in Purvanchal.
The Indian Survey Department, Dehradun, is assisting with village surveys to generate Gharauni using drone mapping technology. Each house in a village is mapped, and the data is displayed publicly. If no objections are raised within two weeks, the information is deemed correct, and the Gharauni is finalised.
Villagers can register household details online, and once a Gharauni is ready, a download link is sent to their mobile phones for free access. Additionally, copies can be obtained from the respective department offices. The initiative aims to settle property disputes and help villagers secure bank loans for housing and other needs.
Uttar Pradesh currently ranks first in the country in implementing this scheme. The Revenue Department has set a target to complete Gharauni distribution in all identified villages by December, ensuring better property records and smoother land management across the state.
