Now, 125 additional Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) in Uttar Pradesh will offer education up to the intermediate level. Currently, these schools provide free residential education only up to Class VIII. Starting from the 2025-26 academic session, each school will admit 100 students in Class IX, allowing a total of 12,500 girls to enroll.
Until last year, 263 KGBVs offered education up to the intermediate level. With this expansion, the number will rise to 388 schools. According to Deputy Education Director (Samagra Shiksha) Dr Mukesh Kumar Singh, there are 746 KGBVs across the state, and the plan is to upgrade all of them gradually. The target is to introduce intermediate-level education in 675 schools by the next academic session.
To support this expansion, academic blocks are being constructed in schools with available land, while separate hostels are being set up in land-constrained institutions to ensure girls can study up to Class XII. Additionally, CCTV cameras are being installed in all schools to enhance monitoring. Student, teacher, and warden attendance is now recorded twice a day to maintain accountability.
The initiative aims to provide quality, free residential education to girls from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, particularly those from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes in remote and underprivileged areas.
