The menace of stray dogs continues to trouble both urban and rural areas of Ghaziabad, with no effective arrangements in place across most municipalities and town panchayats. Acting on the directions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, all nine urban local bodies in the district have now been instructed to set up shelter homes for aggressive dogs and ensure sterilisation drives.

Currently, only the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation has Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres, where over 34,500 stray dogs have been sterilised and vaccinated so far. However, more than 90,000 dogs in the district are still left to be covered. With the cost of sterilising and vaccinating one dog estimated at Rs 1,130, the pending drive is expected to require nearly Rs 10.17 crore.

Officials said land will soon be identified for new shelter homes with assistance from the district administration. Veterinarians will be appointed, and Animal Birth Control Centres will be established across municipalities, similar to Ghaziabad. Budgets for the project will be sought from the state government.

Ghaziabad alone has an estimated stray dog population of over 1.25 lakh. While the Municipal Corporation runs two ABC centres sterilising about 50 dogs daily, preparations are underway to expand the drive across the district by the end of the year in compliance with Supreme Court and CM orders.
