The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) on Wednesday issued an advisory outlining plans to redesign seven “congested intersections” across the city to improve traffic flow. The restructuring will involve measures such as widening intersections, creating additional road space, improving left-turn channels, and adding nearby U-turns, along with other engineering upgrades deemed necessary.

1. Thakurdwara Crossing

2. Hapur Chungi

3. The Madhuban Bapudham roundabout

5. Intersections near Ajnara Integrity

6. Aashiana Chowk

7. Stretch near Bunkar Mart in Raj Nagar Extension

“The intersections will be restructured with infrastructure upgrades, widened, and also beautified,” said Nand Kishor Kalal, the authority’s vice-chairperson. Officials clarified that traffic enforcement does not fall under the GDA’s purview.

A detailed restructuring plan for all seven locations is currently being prepared. Once approvals and tenders are finalised, the work is expected to be completed within six to seven months.

In a separate move, the GDA has decided to revive its long-delayed “comprehensive mobility plan” in collaboration with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI). Although the authority signed an MoU with CRRI in February 2018 and received the mobility plan in 2019, which proposed ways to cut travel time, ease congestion on major routes, and improve existing road networks, officials said the recommendations were never fully put into action.

“We are now renegotiating terms with CRRI and expect an updated comprehensive mobility plan for Ghaziabad within the next six to seven months,” Kalal said. “The plan will help reduce congestion and suggest infrastructure changes. We have already proposed two elevated roads and one flyover to improve vehicular movement on major corridors. Alongside these proposals, we are restructuring seven major intersections that experience regular traffic bottlenecks.”

Rudresh Shukla, GDA’s media coordinator, said the revived plan may either incorporate the findings of the earlier survey or require a fresh assessment. “The previous survey suggested several improvements, but they could not be executed. CRRI will now examine whether those findings are still applicable or if a new survey is needed. The new mobility plan will reflect current ground conditions,” he said.

Proposals Include:

Two elevated stretches have been proposed:

1. A 3.5 km, four-lane elevated road from Raj Nagar Extension crossing to Morti, estimated to cost Rs 350 crore.

2. A 2 km, four-lane elevated stretch from Ghanta Ghar Ramlila Ground to the Bhatia Morh flyover on Grand Trunk Road, with a project cost of Rs 200 crore.
