In a major move to decongest the city's choking traffic arteries, the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has formulated a plan to construct two new elevated roads. The project, estimated to cost approximately Rs 800 crore, aims to provide smooth signal-free connectivity across key transit points. A formal proposal has been sent to the state government, and further proceedings will commence upon approval.

The Traffic Crisis

The decision comes in response to severe traffic congestion observed at Rajnagar Extension and Hapur Chungi, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.

Root Cause: Commuters using the existing elevated road from Delhi currently spill onto the main road of Rajnagar Extension, creating bottlenecks. Similarly, vehicles moving between NH-9 and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway via the Delhi-Meerut Road clog the ALT Centre, Hapur Chungi, and Diamond Flyover routes.

The Proposed Solution

To address these specific pain points, the GDA has proposed two distinct elevated corridors:

Rajnagar Extension To Meerut Road Flyover

  • Route: From GD Goenka School in Rajnagar Extension to the Meerut Road flyover.
  • Length: Over 4 km.
  • Estimated Cost: Approximately Rs 400 crore.
  • Impact: This corridor is designed to make the Rajnagar Extension area congestion-free.

ALT Centre To Shastrinagar

  • Route: From ALT Centre (Sanjay Nagar Sector 23) to Hapur Road, Shastrinagar.
  • Estimated Cost: Over Rs 350 crore.
  • Impact: This road will bypass the notorious HapurChungi intersection, effectively making it signal-free.

Expected Benefits

The new infrastructure is expected to significantly smooth traffic flow for commuters travelling to and from Delhi, Moradnagar, Modinagar, and Meerut. By diverting through-traffic onto these elevated sections, the ground-level congestion at critical junctions like HapurChungi and the Diamond Flyover will be resolved.
