A woman sustained serious injuries after accidentally mixing two chemicals while cleaning her bathroom in Indirapuram, Ghaziabad. She was using a combination of toilet cleaner and bleach when she suddenly fell ill. She was rushed to Yashoda Medicity and, after a brief stay in the ICU, was discharged.
How The Incident Took Place Happened?
According to reports, the woman was cleaning her house before guests arrived. In an effort to make the toilet extra clean, she mixed bleach with a toilet cleaner, causing a chemical reaction that released light fumes.She inhaled the smoke and soon began experiencing breathing difficulties. Her family rushed to the bathroom after hearing her cries and found her in a semi-conscious state. She was immediately taken to Medicity, where she received prompt treatment and a brief stay in the ICU.
Dr Ankit Bhatia, a senior consultant at the hospital, confirmed that the toilet cleaner used by the woman clearly warns against mixing it with other chemicals. The product from her home was brought in and shown to him, and he explained that combining these chemicals creates a toxic gas that can cause instant lung damage. Fortunately, her condition has since stabilized, and she has been discharged after successful treatment.
Things Should Keep In Mind While Cleaning Washroom
1. Do not close the bathroom door while cleaning, as proper ventilation is essential to prevent harmful fumes from accumulating, especially when using strong cleaning agents.
2. Never mix bleach with other cleaners—combining it with toilet cleaners containing hydrochloric acid, ammonia-based products, glass cleaners, or vinegar and lemon-based solutions can release dangerous gases like chlorine or chloramine, which can severely affect breathing and damage the lungs.
3. Avoid mixing bleach with alcohol-based cleaners, as this reaction can produce chloroform and other toxic gases that may cause dizziness, disorientation, or even unconsciousness.
Problems Caused By Exposure To These Gases
1. Difficulty breathing accompanied by throat irritation, stinging in the eyes, chest tightness, and coughing.
2. Dizziness may occur, and in severe cases, the person can lose consciousness.
3. Exposure can also lead to lung inflammation and other respiratory complications.
Precautions To Avoid Such Accidents
1. Never mix cleaning chemicals such as toilet cleaner, bleach, acid, or disinfectants, and always read product instructions carefully; if using another chemical afterward, rinse the area thoroughly to prevent dangerous reactions.
2. Ensure proper ventilation while cleaning by keeping windows open and using an exhaust fan, and always wear gloves and a mask to protect yourself from fumes and splashes.
3. Keep all cleaning products out of children’s reach with lids tightly closed, and if you experience dizziness, irritation, or difficulty breathing, leave the area immediately, get fresh air, and seek medical help if needed.
