Patients from Noida, Greater Noida, Yamuna City, and other nearby areas will no longer have to travel to Delhi or surrounding private hospitals for eight super-speciality services.
The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida received approval to operate departments for cardiology, neurology, oncology, and nephrology during its 10th board meeting held at the Lok Bhavan in Lucknow on Tuesday. Approval was also granted to develop GIMS along the lines of Lucknow's SPGI, and robotic surgery will be available at GIMS soon.
This approval allows GIMS to soon start outpatient departments (OPDs) for these and other super-speciality services. As a result, patients from Noida, Greater Noida, Yamuna City, Bulandshahr, and surrounding cities will no longer need to rush to Delhi AIIMS or private hospitals, enabling them to receive better treatment at a lower cost.
Addressing Current Inconvenience
At present, GIMS handles hundreds of such cases daily, causing difficulties for patients. The cardiology OPD only operates on Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 am to 11 am, and visiting doctors provide neurology consultations. This causes significant inconvenience.
Once these new services begin, patients will be able to receive comprehensive care from diagnosis to treatment. Every month, GIMS handles:
- 10 to 20 cancer cases
- 40 to 70 cardiology cases
- 10 to 25 oncology cases
- 180 to 300 neurology cases
Seriously ill patients among this group currently have to be referred to higher-level centres.
Robotic Surgery To Be Introduced
Approval was also granted for performing robotic surgery at GIMS. All types of surgery will be performed at the institute using robots. If required, doctors from AIIMS or PGI will be engaged to conduct these surgeries.
This means all kinds of surgery can now be performed at GIMS, saving patients both time and money, providing them with specialised facilities and eliminating the need to travel to Delhi for advanced procedures.
"Approval for eight super-speciality services and robotic surgery was granted in the 10th board meeting," said Brigadier Dr Rakesh Gupta, Director of GIMS. "We are trying to start these services for patients as soon as possible. Posts for the super-speciality services are being sanctioned."
