The process of installing QR codes on auto-rickshaws operating in the Gorakhpur metropolis has begun, enabling passengers and authorities to instantly access complete vehicle details through a mobile scan. The initiative is being carried out jointly by the Auto Association, the Transport Department, and the Traffic Police. However, progress has been slow, with only around 800 autos fitted with QR codes in the first half of November.

A total of 3,141 autos in the city are required to install the QR code stickers, and the system will become mandatory from December 1. Strict action will be taken against any auto found operating without the code, officials said.

Regional Transport Officer (Enforcement) Sanjay Kumar Jha stated that the move will make it easier to identify autos running in the city, as scanning the QR code will display all vehicle-related information.

Currently, 2,757 CNG auto-rickshaws and a total of 3,141 autos of various fuel types, CNG, LPG, and petrol, hold valid permits to operate within a 16 km radius of Gorakhpur city centre. The new QR code-based stickers have been introduced to validate these permits and must be displayed on all authorised vehicles.

Meanwhile, the designation of operational zones for e-rickshaws remains pending. Although the Transport Department had earlier defined five zones and issued colour-coded stickers, the zoning plan has yet to be implemented. E-rickshaws continue to operate freely without fixed routes, contributing to traffic congestion and frequent road mishaps. Experts attribute the stalled implementation to a lack of cooperation from e-rickshaw drivers.
