Gorakhpur Cantt Railway Crossing: New Y-Shaped Over Bridge Approved; Construction To Finish In 1.5 Years

A two-lane, 'Y'-shaped overbridge at the Gorakhpur Cantt railway crossing (157 A Special) will be completed within 1.5 years. The railway administration has nominated an agency for the construction work and has also issued a Letter of Acceptance (LOA). A period of 1.5 years has been set to complete the construction work, which will commence soon. According to sources, the railway administration has given its final approval to the new design of the overbridge.

Bridge Specifications And Revised Budget Approval

The bridge will be 7.5 metres wide and 870 metres long. The construction organisation has also approved a revised budget of approximately Rs 53 crore to start the work. An agency has been nominated for the construction of a two-lane road overbridge at the level crossing near Gorakhpur Cantt railway station. The LOA has also been issued. A target of 1.5 years has been set for the construction work.

Current Connectivity Issues And Passenger Hardships

The railway administration has developed Cantt as a terminal station but has so far failed to provide an adequate access route. While a route to the station exists, the access from the north requires passing through the railway crossing to enter the city. People have to wait for hours in the sun and rain for the crossing to open. Students and patients face the greatest hardship. Accidents are also a frequent occurrence as people attempt to cross. Due to these difficulties, passenger footfall at Cantt station has failed to increase.

Benefits For Residents Of Nandanagar And Nearby Areas

The construction of the overbridge at the railway crossing will ease movement for both rail passengers and the general public. People will be able to cross easily using the overbridge. Besides passengers using Gorakhpur Cantt station, it will facilitate the movement of lakhs of residents, students, and working professionals from a dozen neighbourhoods such as Nandanagar, Jharna Tola, Lalganj, Gayatrinagar, Unchwa and Dargahiya. People will no longer have to wait for the level crossing to open.

Expansion Of Train Operations And New Entrances

Train services on the Varanasi route have already commenced from Cantt station. Local trains will also be operated on the Narkatiaganj and Chhapra routes. Furthermore, in addition to the bridge, the railway administration has initiated the process of creating another entrance and access route on army land south of Cantt station.

Chief Public Relations Officer of North Eastern Railway Pankaj Kumar Singh said that the road overbridge will provide significant relief to road users. The operation of trains in the Gorakhpur Cantt yard will also become smoother.
