To immortalise the bravery and sacrifices of Gorkha soldiers, the historic Gorkha War Memorial in Gorakhpur will undergo extensive beautification and the construction of a museum. On Thursday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan jointly performed the bhoomi pujan (foundation stone-laying ceremony) for the Rs 45 crore project, which will be spread over 1.33 acres.

Addressing the ceremony, CM Yogi said the memorial will serve as a symbol of the valour of Gorkha soldiers and further strengthen cultural and political ties between India and Nepal. Recalling the history of the Gorkhas, he noted that after the 1815 treaty with the British, Gorkha soldiers became a part of the Indian Army and achieved victories on numerous battlefronts.

CDS General Anil Chauhan highlighted the identity and legacy of Gorkha soldiers, mentioning that 20,000 Gorkhas sacrificed their lives in the First World War alone. He added that the revamped memorial will inspire future generations and reinforce India-Nepal relations.

During the event, CM Yogi honoured five Veer Naris (brave women), and the ceremony featured a performance by the Gorkha band, the traditional Khukri dance, and a video presentation on Gorkha history and heroism. Lieutenant General Sanjeev Chauhan, President of the Gorkha Regiment, said the Gorakhpur memorial is globally unique, noting that the rare bronze medal housed here exists only in three locations worldwide: Gorakhpur, Varanasi, and London.

The Chief Minister and CDS also performed a puja at the Gorkha regimental temple and paid floral tributes to the soldiers. CM Yogi further announced that memorials will be constructed in the PAC and Police Lines to provide opportunities for introspection for police personnel. He also stated that Agniveers joining service next year will be allocated 20 per cent of positions in the Uttar Pradesh Police, securing their future careers.
