The Greater Noida authority has hired a contractor to manage traffic at Gaur Chowk, one of the busiest intersections in Greater Noida West. The project is expected to be completed in 18 months at a cost of Rs 81.27 crore. An authority official stated that work on the underpass will soon begin.

On May 1, HT reported on Gaur Chowk's ongoing traffic jams. The underpass site was visited by a team from the Greater Noida government and Noida traffic police to evaluate pre-project work including clearing encroachments and moving trees and electric poles.

At Gaur Chowk, traffic from the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Crossings Republik, and Greater Noida converges, and traffic jams are frequently observed there. The chaos at Gaur Chowk is attributed by locals, traffic officials, and experts to inadequate infrastructure, irrational turns, and a lack of signs.

There are almost 400,000 people who reside in nearby villages and high-rises in Greater Noida West and deal with everyday traffic at Gaur Chowk. Currently, to control congestion, traffic police have established two U-turns around 100 metres away from the roundabout and limited traffic on two of Gaur Chowk's arms, also known as Char Murti and Kisan Chowk.

According to authority officials, this project has become increasingly important after the Parthala flyover in Noida opened in June of last year, which caused traffic bottlenecks at Gaur Chowk.

The Taj Highway will have an underpass built to link Greater Noida to Gaur City, and subsequently to the Delhi-Meerut Expressway. It would cross over with the Noida Metro's proposed Greater Noida West line.
