The postal department has discontinued its long-standing Registered Post service from October 1,2025. All services will now be merged into the Speed Post service, which officials state is significantly more secure and faster.
According to postal department employees, the decision to merge the services was driven by technological advancements and the increasing demand for quicker deliveries in modern times. Registered Post was traditionally used for sending legal notices, appointment letters, government orders and personal correspondence.
The new system was initially planned for implementation on September 1 but was delayed due to a software update. An official letter from the postal department announcing the change was issued on September 26, 2025.
New Features Of Speed Post
The enhanced Speed Post service will offer several advanced features:
Tracking Facility: Senders can track the status of their mail.
OTP-Based Delivery: For added security, the postal worker will only hand over the mail to the recipient after verifying a One-Time Password (OTP).
Optional Receipt: Senders can obtain a receipt for an additional fee of Rs 5.
Confirming the new policy, Senior Superintendent of Posts BK Pandey stated that the Registered Post service will not be available from October 1.
