In a shocking incident, police have arrested Vishal Singhal of Ganganagar, Meerut, who allegedly murdered his mother, father, and first wife, staging their deaths as accidents to claim crores in insurance money. Investigations revealed that Vishal had taken out over 60 insurance policies worth Rs 50 crore in the names of family members, all listing him as the beneficiary.
According to police, Vishal’s greed for wealth drove him to commit the gruesome crimes between 2017 and 2024, using fake documents and forged vehicle registrations to claim insurance benefits.
The trail of murder began in 2017, when Vishal allegedly killed his mother, Prabha Devi, while on a motorcycle ride to Pilkhuwa, Hapur. Police initially treated the case as a road accident, allowing him to claim Rs 80 lakh in insurance.
In 2020, the death of his first wife, Ekta Singhal, was reported as a heart attack, but the post-mortem revealed that she had been strangled. There were several policies in Ekta's name, from which lakhs of rupees were obtained. Vishal linked this to an insurance claim as well.
After the death of his first wife, Ekta, he married three more times, continuing the insurance scam each time. It was his fourth wife, Shreya, who exposed the conspiracy.
In 2024, a false case was registered stating that his father, Mukesh Chand, a photographer by profession, was injured in a collision with an unknown vehicle in Garhmukteshwar. After he was admitted to the hospital, Vishal strangled him to death.
Between 2018 and 2023, 64 policies were taken out in his father's name, with a total claim value of Rs 39 crore. Rs 50 lakh from two insurance claims had already been deposited into his account.
Vishal's fourth wife, Shreya, found documents at home related to the previous deaths. She discovered that Vishal was also pressuring her to sign insurance policies. Frightened, Shreya informed the Sambhal police.
The Sambhal police alerted Hapur, and on September 29, 2024, Vishal was arrested with his accomplice, Satish Kumar, on Modi Nagar Road. Satish had assisted in the murders, creating forged documents, and at the hospital.
Shreya's testimony provided the police with evidence, such as the fake Aadhaar and hospital records. Police lapses were evident in the initial cases. The cases were closed after filing charge sheets under the accident sections (IPC 279, 337). Now, a re-investigation is underway on the orders of senior officials.
