Kanpur News: An FIR has been lodged against eight final-year engineering students from Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU) in Kanpur, following accusations of attempting to murder their juniors. The incident reportedly occurred when the seniors allegedly assaulted their juniors for refusing their instructions to remove their clothing.
The complaint was filed by a third-year BTech Electronics student at the Nawabganj police station. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Dinesh Tripathi, the FIR includes serious charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. These sections included attempted murder, causing hurt voluntarily, acts that endanger life, rioting, criminal intimidation and intentional insult, alongside specific allegations related to ragging.

The FIR states that the accused, all fourth-year students, invited the complainant and a classmate to Abdul Kalam Hostel to attend a "birthday party." However, this invitation was allegedly code for ragging. After they arrived, the juniors were asked to remove their clothes and when they declined, the situation turned violent. The complainant reported that the seniors returned armed with sticks, belts, and iron rods, resulting in a brutal assault.
In the FIR, it was noted that the juniors argued for leniency, explaining that they had already faced ragging during their first year. Despite this, the seniors reacted aggressively.
The police have instructed to summon the accused students for questioning as part of their investigation. Meanwhile, the HBTU administration has initiated its own inquiry to determine whether the incident qualifies as ragging or not.
Ragging involves first-year students being targeted by seniors. However, in this incident a third-year student has reported final-year students for such behaviour.
