A woman in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was harassed by her husband and in-laws, and has accused them of attempting to murder her over dowry demands. She stated that her in-laws locked her in a room with a venomous snake, which bit her. She is currently under medical supervision.

According to the TOI report, the woman was locked with a snake in a room on September 18. After suffering a snakebite, she called her elder sister, who took her to Government Ursala Hospital. The woman also alleged that she informed her in-laws about the bite but they refused to take her to the hospital, despite several pleas.

Woman Sister Filed Complained 

The woman’s sister, Rizwana, told officials that when she was crying in pain, her in-laws stood outside and laughed. Officials said her condition is stable but serious.

Dowry Harassment 

TOI reported that the woman, Reshma, got married in 2021. Soon after the marriage, her husband, Shahnawaz, and in-laws started demanding a dowry of Rs 5 lakh and tried to strangle her several times. Initially, when they demanded Rs 1.5 lakh for renovation of a room, the woman’s parents gave the money but then they started asking for more money. When her parents refused, they locked her in the room, took her daughter away and loosed a snake on her.

In a separate incident, a 24-year-old man, Mohit Kumar, died from a snakebite in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, after wrapping a snake around his neck while recording a video. According to Bhopa SHO Omprakash Singh, Mohit had caught the snake from a neighbouring house in Morna village on Sunday evening.

He was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead by doctors. The body has been sent for postmortem, and an investigation is underway. Locals said a video of the incident, showing the snake around Mohit’s neck, has surfaced on social media. The snake was later released into a nearby forest.
