Three weeks after the inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), the Kanpur Metro has finally received the No Objection Certificate (NOC) to begin passenger operations from Motijheel to Kanpur Central Station.

The Metro authorities promptly addressed all the concerns raised by CMRS during the inspection and submitted a compliance report, paving the way for the final approval. With the NOC secured, the Metro can now announce its launch date at any time.

Notably, operations on this stretch will commence in Automatic Train Operation (ATO) mode right from the first day — a rare move, as most metros initially begin in Automatic Train Protection (ATP) mode and shift to ATO later.

ATO mode allows for largely automated operations, significantly reducing the risk of accidents caused by human error. The system relies on Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology to ensure efficient and safe train movement.

CMRS Janak Kumar Garg had conducted the inspection on March 20 and 21, thoroughly checking the metro track, tunnel, stations, ramp, viaduct, tunnel ventilation, and signalling systems.

Passenger safety features and speed trials were also reviewed during the inspection. There’s also speculation of a high-profile inauguration, possibly linked to the Prime Minister’s schedule, as preparations are being expedited for the launch event.
