To ease traffic congestion in Kanpur city and promote industrial development, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is fast-tracking the construction of a 93-kilometre-long Ring Road, which will pass through Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, and Unnao districts. The project, being developed with an investment of Rs 4,000 crore, is slated for completion by 2027, with Package 1 expected to be operational by 2026.
As part of the project, 13 toll plazas are planned along the ring road, located at key entry and exit points. According to Pankaj Yadav, Project Director, NHAI–Kanpur, these toll points will ensure regulated access to the ring road and toll charges will be based on distance travelled. The exact fare structure will be finalised once the construction is complete.
In a driver-friendly move, a special Fastag pass scheme will be introduced from August 15, offering a single-trip billing system. This means vehicles entering and exiting the ring road—regardless of entry and exit points—will be charged for only one trip if they use Fastag. This benefit is exclusive to Fastag users operating within the ring road limits.
The Ring Road will connect major national highways such as Kanpur–Etawah, GT Road, Kanpur–Jhansi, Kanpur–Sagar, Prayagraj Highway, and Lucknow Road, as well as several state highways.
The construction is divided into four packages:
-Package-1 (23 km): From Mandhana to Sachendi, road levelling and bridge/culvert work is in progress. The contract is with Raj Construction Company.
-Package 2: From Aata to Mandhana, includes a 3.2 km long bridge over the Ganga River. The contract has been given to LLC Multi Inter-Regional Company (Russia).
-Package-3 (19.23 km): From Ramaipur to Aata in Unnao via Ganga Bridge, this section will connect Chakeri Airport, Defence Corridor, and Prayagraj Highway. Executed by Hillways Company (Rishikesh).
-Package-4 (24.5 km): From Sachendi to Ramaipur, land levelling is completed. Also awarded to Raj Construction Company.
Proposed Toll Plaza Locations by Package:
-Package-1: Mandhana (Maharajpur), NH-2 Kisan Nagar, Shivli Road
-Package-2: Transganga City (Sitapur-Raebareli Road), Paigupur Bangar, Hindupur Kachhar, Pipri
-Package-3: Kaderpatari, Sahjani, Azad Marg (Unnao), Lucknow–Kanpur Expressway
-Package-4: Rooma, Hamirpur Road (near Reliance Petrol Pump)
Once completed, the Ring Road is expected to significantly reduce urban traffic congestion, boost regional connectivity, and support the state’s industrial growth.
