King George’s Medical University (KGMU) is set to expand its robotic surgery capabilities with two new machines for the Urology and Orthopaedics departments. The university already operates two robotic systems in General Surgery and Surgical Oncology, received under CSR funding six months ago, but high procedure costs have limited usage to around 26 surgeries so far.

According to KGMU spokesperson Prof KK Singh, the government has approved the purchase of a third robotic system for the Urology department at an estimated cost of Rs 28 crore. A proposal for a fourth system in Orthopaedics, costing around Rs 12 crore, is pending approval. These machines are expected to significantly aid complex urology and orthopaedic procedures.

Meanwhile, other institutions are advancing faster in robotic care — the Lohia Institute has conducted over 100 robotic surgeries in Urology and Nephrology within three months, with more than 60 per cent involving cancer patients.

Ahead of Independence Day, KGMU will also open two new Hospital Revolving Fund (HRF) pharmacy outlets — one in the Orthopaedics Super Speciality Building and another in the Ophthalmology Department. Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sonia Nityanand said patients will get medicines and implants at 60–70 per cent lower prices than market rates.

Prof Nityanand added that after securing the highest NAAC grade of A++ and surpassing PGI in scoring, KGMU is working towards NABH accreditation. Nineteen NAAC standards have been met in the last seven months as part of efforts to enhance patient services.
