The northern part of India is crippled with deteriorating air quality, adding to the concerns a report by the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) stated that Lucknow is experiencing more noise than ever before. The report, which was released on Saturday, measured the noise levels in different areas of the city in the months of September and October, which gives insights into the rising noise levels in the Uttar Pradesh state capital.

The report found that Indira Nagar was the loudest residential area during the day, while Gomti Nagar was the loudest at night. Both areas exceeded the permissible noise limits of 55 and 45 decibels for day and night, respectively. In fact, all residential areas in the city had higher noise levels than the national standards.

The report also showed an increase in noise pollution compared to the previous post-monsoon period. Indira Nagar had an average noise level of 73.5 decibels during the day, followed by Gomti Nagar with 72.1. At night, Gomti Nagar had an average noise level of 64.2 decibels, followed by Indira Nagar with 61.5.

Among the commercial areas, Chowk was the noisiest during the day with 80 decibels, followed by Alambagh with 78. At night, Alambagh was the noisiest with 74 decibels, followed by Aminabad with 79.9. The noise levels in these areas ranged from 51.9 to 107.3 decibels during the day and from 45.2 to 90.1 decibels at night. All these values were significantly higher than the national limits of 65 and 55 decibels for day and night, respectively.

Doctors warned that prolonged exposure to noise could cause stress and hearing problems to the locals which may further lead to depression and anxiety among them.
