In response to the recent rape and murder of a woman by an auto driver in Malihabad, the Lucknow Police has launched ‘Project Safe Ride’, aimed at enhancing passenger safety through mandatory verification of auto, taxi, and e-rickshaw drivers. The initiative, supported by the RTO, requires all drivers and vehicle owners to register their details and obtain a QR code, which must be displayed on the front glass of their vehicles.
Passengers will be able to scan the QR code to access complete information about the vehicle owner and driver, making public transport more transparent and accountable. Vehicles found operating without QR codes after August 31 will be seized, according to Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Bablu Kumar.
The registration process begins on July 29 and can be completed through the UPCAP app or the official website (http://lucknowpolice.up.gov.in/erickshaw). Applicants must provide valid registration, a driving license, a fitness certificate, a character certificate, and photos of both the driver and owner. Upon submission, a temporary receipt will be issued, valid until August 31. Once verification is completed, the QR code will be sent to the vehicle owner for download and display.
Additionally, all drivers will be required to wear uniforms as prescribed by the RTO. A crackdown will begin in September against vehicles operating without the QR code or uniform compliance.
However, the move has met with resistance from local unions. The E-Rickshaw United Front has opposed the policy, claiming it will lead to increased brokerage and illegal extortion. Vice President Irfan Khan demanded that verifications be conducted directly by the RTO. Other union leaders, including Mohammad Aziz and Rakesh (Publicity Minister), have also expressed concerns over the implementation of the rule.
Despite the opposition, the police remain firm on enforcing the project, citing it as a necessary step towards ensuring safer public transport in the city.
