Two new electricity substations will be constructed in Gomti Nagar's Vishesh Khand and Vinamra Khand at a cost of Rs 20 crore. This project is set to provide a more reliable power supply to over 45,000 consumers and resolve persistent issues like load shedding and technical faults caused by rising electricity demand.
Addressing The Current Power Strain
Currently, the six existing substations in Gomti Nagar—located in Vipin Khand, Mantri Awas, Gwari, Vishwas Khand, Viraj Khand, and Vibhuti Khand—are operating at full capacity. With no space to install additional power transformers, any increase in electricity demand often leads to technical glitches. During peak season, engineers have been forced to resort to load shedding to manage the high demand.
The new substations are designed to solve this problem for the foreseeable future.
Project Details And Timeline
Dheeraj Yadav, Executive Engineer of the Gomti Nagar division, provided the project specifics:
Locations: A 750-square-meter substation in Vishesh Khand and a 1,200-square-meter substation in Vinamra Khand.
Capacity: Each substation will be built with 2 x 10 MVA power transformers and will include provisions for installing additional transformers in the future.
Timeline: Following a three-month tender process, construction is scheduled to begin by the end of December 2025. The goal is to make the substations operational for consumers by May 2026.
Scheme: The project is being executed under the Business Plan scheme.
Once constructed, these substations will absorb excess load from any of the existing facilities that become overloaded, ensuring a stable power supply. Yadav stated that this upgrade should prevent electricity problems in the Gomti Nagar area for the next 8 to 10 years.
The Driving Force: Soaring Electricity Demand
The need for this infrastructure upgrade is driven by a sharp increase in electricity consumption in Gomti Nagar.
Overall demand has doubled in recent years due to the proliferation of apartments and new shopping complexes.
Commercial activities in residential areas have increased, leading to a 15 per cent rise in the number of commercial connections.
The average electricity connection load for residential consumers has also increased from 3 kW to between 5 and 10 kW.
