The Railway and Metro administrations are concerned that kite flying during the Makar Sankranti festival could disrupt the speed and operation of trains and the metro. In light of this, both administrations have appealed to residents to avoid flying kites near railway lines and metro corridors during the festival.

Risk Of Tripping And Delays

When kite strings (manjha) come into contact with the overhead equipment (OHE) wires, it often causes the system to trip. This results in train and metro operations coming to a halt for 15 to 20 minutes. Consequently, passengers traveling on these services face delays in reaching their destinations.

Danger Of High Voltage Electrocution

Furthermore, individuals risk getting electrocuted or severely burnt if they come into contact with the OHE wires while trying to catch kites near the railway lines. Kuldeep Tiwari, Senior DCM of Northern Railway (Lucknow Division), stated that a high-voltage current of approximately 25,000 volts flows through the railway's overhead electric lines.

Safety Advisory Issued

There is a high probability of serious accidents if kite strings come into contact with these wires. Therefore, people are urged not to fly kites near railway lines, electric wires, or tracks. Parents are advised to prevent children from playing or flying kites in railway areas. Additionally, the public should avoid sitting or walking on railway tracks and refrain from using mobile phones or headphones near them.

This appeal has been issued in the interest of public safety and welfare. Similarly, the Metro administration has requested citizens to refrain from flying kites near the metro corridor, noting that kite flying has disrupted operations in the past, causing significant inconvenience to passengers.
