The process of redeveloping Meerut City Station has begun. The station was included among the 150 stations selected across the country under the Amrit Bharat Station Yojana a year and a half ago. The tender for redeveloping the station has been finalised, and the work has been assigned to the Aerocon company. A team from the railway's construction wing has arrived in Meerut and has started survey work.

Staff Asked To Vacate Quarters

Meerut City station was built in 1911 during British rule. Although development work has been carried out here from time to time, the station will now be developed as the "station of the Kranti Dhara" (land of revolution).

Work has commenced under this plan. In the first phase, more than 35 staff quarters will be demolished, as these residences have reached the end of their lifespan. The occupants of the quarters have been asked to vacate them. After the land in front is cleared, parking and other facilities will be built. The office on platform number one will also be relocated.

When Meerut City station was selected under the Amrit Station Yojana in July 2024, the cost of its reconstruction was set at Rs 252 crore. The original plan included a four-storey building at the front, but it has now been revised after questions were raised in the feasibility report about spending such a large sum. The report revealed that constructing a shopping complex and hotel on the first floor would not be profitable at this time.

Following this, a new proposal for Rs 98 crore was prepared. Providing an approach road to the station from Rohta Road, along with facilities for purchasing tickets there, is also a priority.

The following works will be undertaken:

- The eastern and western parts of the station will be connected by a foot overbridge.

- Escalators and lifts on all platforms.

- A new entrance and exit gate on the western side towards Rohta Road, along with a booking window and an enquiry centre.

- Expansion of the parking area.

- A VIP lounge and a waiting room equipped with modern facilities.
