In a major boost to emergency healthcare in western Uttar Pradesh, construction has begun on a 100-bed, state-of-the-art Level-1 trauma centre at Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College (LLRMC), Meerut. The facility, being developed on the lines of the renowned SGPGI trauma centre in Lucknow, is expected to be completed by March 2027.

Once operational, the trauma centre will ensure that critically injured road accident victims receive advanced treatment locally, eliminating the need for referrals to other hospitals. The centre will provide round-the-clock services from specialist doctors across four key disciplines: orthopaedics, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and general surgery.

Equipped with modern medical infrastructure, the trauma centre will house modular operation theatres, CT scan, MRI, and digital X-ray facilities under one roof. To ensure 24×7 care, around 50 specialist doctors and more than 250 paramedical and nursing staff will be appointed.

The decision to establish a Level-1 trauma centre in Meerut comes amid a steady rise in road accidents in the region. With several major highways such as the Delhi- Meerut Expressway and the upcoming Ganga Expressway passing through western UP, accident cases have increased significantly. Meerut now ranks among the top 20 districts in the state in terms of road accidents, with fatalities rising from around 300 annually before 2022 to over 350 in 2025.

Construction is being carried out by Jal Nigam C&DS, Meerut, at an estimated cost of Rs 49 crore. The first instalment of Rs 16.85 crore has already been released, and foundation work is underway between the emergency department and the post-mortem house.

The trauma centre will play a crucial role in providing treatment during the ‘golden hour’, the first hour after an accident, which is critical for saving lives. Patients will be triaged into red, yellow, and green zones based on injury severity, ensuring timely and prioritised care for the most critical cases.

The four-storey building, including a basement, will feature dedicated emergency zones, modular operating theatres, intensive care and general wards, doctors’ duty rooms, and parking facilities. The trauma centre will also be connected to the upcoming 100-bed Critical Care Unit and the emergency department via a footbridge, allowing seamless transfer of patients for advanced care.

Medical college authorities have stated that the facility will significantly strengthen emergency response capabilities in western Uttar Pradesh and help reduce preventable deaths caused by road accidents.
