Meerut Metro Expansion: There’s a major development regarding the Meerut Metro: Garh Road, one of the city’s key routes, is currently being widened under the CM Grid Scheme, and the upgrade includes preparations for the upcoming second metro corridor. While this corridor is still in the planning stage, authorities are ensuring that the current roadwork aligns with future metro construction plans.

According to Jagran.com, new dividers and culverts are being built along Garh Road. These dividers are being made extra wide to accommodate metro pillars later. Similarly, while laying utility cables in culverts, enough space is being left for metro-related cabling in the future.

Currently, the first corridor of the Meerut Metro stretching from Bhurbaral (Meerut South Station) to Modipuram is fully ready. In just a few days, residents will see metro trains running on this route. The second corridor, however, is still in the proposed stage and may take a few more years to materialize.

RITES Limited had created a detailed project report (DPR) for two corridors. The first was from Partapur to Pallavpuram Phase-One via Begumpul, while the second was proposed from Shraddhapuri Phase-Two to Gokulpur village via Hapur Adda Chauraha.

Since the country’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) was also planned on the same alignment as the first metro corridor, the metro was integrated with the rapid rail project. That’s why both Namo Bharat (rapid rail) and the Meerut Metro will operate on the same tracks in the city. The rapid rail will continue onward to Delhi, while the metro will terminate at Bhurbaral.

As for the second corridor, no new formal announcements have been made yet, but officials have indicated that work on it is likely to begin in the coming years. In fact, local MP Arun Govil recently raised this issue with the Chief Minister, requesting approval for the second corridor and even proposing a third corridor from Football Chowk to the Baghpat Road Flyover.

Though RITES had earlier completed the DPR for the second corridor, it will now need to be revised due to changes in the proposed route. Instead of starting from Shradhapuri, the corridor could now begin at Begumpul and stretch toward Gokulpur or even further, depending on the final blueprint.
