Meerut Police shut down 15 hotels that were reportedly operating with proper authorisation on the Delhi-Dehradun Highway. These hotels, displaying signs of OYO rooms and hotels, were operating under the Jani Police Station area and were accused of facilitating unethical activities. Authorities took action after residents of several colonies, located in the area, protested against the daily operations of these hotels.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when residents from the colony protested outside these hotels and chanted slogans against the police. Their demonstration led to chaos among the employees and guests present, resulting in a stampede-like situation in the hotels.
As the situation escalated, the police arrived at the scene and calmed the protesters, ensuring their action against the complaints raised by the residents of SGM, AIM, VK, AK, Green Palace, Sun Rise, Jacin and Wheel Palace colonies.
The locals accused some homeowners of renting out their properties to such hotel owners while residing elsewhere. According to the residents, these hotels hold illegal activities with a constant flow of young men and women visiting the premises.
Following the incident, the officer in charge of Jani police station, Prajant Tyagi, confirmed that 15 hotels were found to be illegally operating in the residential colony and have since been closed. He warned that any attempt to reopen these hotels would result in legal action against the operators.
This incident mirrors a similar protest that occurred two months prior in the Kankarkheda police station area, where women successfully campaigned for the closure of several hotels. Despite these actions reaching higher authorities, the increase in the number of hotels persists along the Delhi-Dehradun Highway.
