A detention centre (for holding illegal foreign nationals) is set to be established in Meerut, on the lines of the one in Nandgram, Ghaziabad, to deal with illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators. At least 500 foreign nationals can be housed in this centre.

The DM has ordered the Municipal Commissioner to immediately identify a location for the establishment of this centre. Meanwhile, the police conducted a survey of migrants living in 52 shantytowns and slums, identifying 6,500 people from 1,600 families.

After recording the names of 3,200 of these individuals, their ID details have been sent to the police departments of various states for verification. SSP Dr Vipin Tada stated that four months ago, a slum-dwelling cell (jhuggi jhopdi prakoshth) was formed and identified 52 such locations in the district where migrants live in shantytowns and slums.

The highest proportion, 50 per cent of the migrants, is from Assam, while others are from Bengal, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. He stated that ID verification will clarify whether they are migrants or foreign nationals. He added that the names of those who have not provided their IDs have been recorded in a register, and their every activity is being monitored.

DM Dr VK Singh stated that land for the detention centre will be identified soon. The police have been instructed to keep a close watch on those living in shantytowns and slums. So far, no citizens from Bangladesh, Rohingya, or countries of African origin have been found in the district. He stated that facilities for food, drink, and medical treatment will also be provided at the detention centres.
