The fame of Meerut's Gajak, known for its distinct taste and aroma, extends beyond India to foreign shores. On Wednesday, a significant milestone was added to its legacy. Meerut's 121-year-old traditional product has been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag.
The Meerut Rewri Gajak Vyapari Welfare Association had applied for this recognition at the Chennai-based registry. Manufacturers in Meerut are ecstatic about receiving the GI Tag. Association President Varun Gupta stated that the livelihoods of over 10,000 people are directly linked to this industry.
Dr Rajnikant, popularly known as the "GI Man," played a crucial role in achieving this milestone. Sameer Thapar, the General Secretary of the association and operator of Bengal Sweet House, explained that with the GI Tag, anyone searching for "GajakRewri" globally on Google will now see Meerut's name.
This recognition will expand the global reach of Meerut's manufacturers and boost trade. This seasonal business, which runs for about four to five months in Meerut, is estimated to be worth Rs 50 to Rs 60 crore. There are currently 35 firms engaged in the production of Rewri and Gajak in the city.
A 121-Year-Old Tradition
The story dates back to 1904 at Lala Ramchandra's shop in Gudri Bazar. White sesame seeds were kept in a container to prepare TilBugga. Meanwhile, an artisan was heating jaggery in a cauldron to make Chikki. While transferring the hot jaggery to another vessel, it accidentally spilled into the container holding the sesame seeds.
Lala Ji was initially furious at the mistake. To ensure the material was not wasted, he instructed the artisan to create something out of the jaggery-sesame mixture. After two to three hours of effort, an item resembling Rewri was created. It was well-received by the people. Continuous improvements were made, and by 1915, the Meerut Rewri, much like its current form, had come into existence. Even British officers were admirers of its taste. Today, one can find numerous shops selling RewriGajak under the name of Ramchandra.
A Healthy Winter Treat
More than just a sweet, Gajak and Rewri are excellent health options for winter due to their sesame and jaggery content. Ingredients like cloves, cardamom, mace, and nutmeg are added, making it beneficial for health during the cold season. Sales typically begin from Navratri and continue until early February.
For a long time, the market was dominated by Jaggery Rewri and Cashew Gajak. Later, varieties like Patti Gajak and Spring Roll Gajak were added. Now, innovations like Chocolate Roll Gajak and Dry Fruit Samosa Gajak have also hit the market. Varun Agarwal mentioned that their Gajak and Rewri are exported to 18 countries.
What Is A GI Tag?
A Geographical Indication (GI) Tag is a sign or name used on products (such as agricultural goods, handicrafts, or industrial products) that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. It helps prevent counterfeit products and assists farmers and producers in getting better value and global recognition.
